Reading Rockets

It’s a Blast!

The pictures you see are of me enjoying the best part of my week.

I read to Pre-K kids in 3 different classrooms on Fridays. I am part of the Reading Rockets childhood literacy volunteer reading program sponsored by the St. Simons Rotary Club. We have readers in 5 Glynn County elementary schools, and we read to Kindergarten and Pre-Kindergarten school children once a week.

The goal is to get young children interested in reading, and we read a variety of books on a variety of topics. I don’t “just read,” I look for ways to help them with their vocabulary, explain writing structure (rhyming patterns), and help them follow along in the story by asking questions as the

story continues.

At the end of the school year, our plan is to give each child a book of their own to keep and begin the journey over the summer of reading for fun. We will kick off our Book Fair fundraiser next Tuesday to raise the funds to pay for the books. (Let me know if you would like to contribute to the cause.)

As I said, it’s the best part of my week, and it could be the best part of yours, as well. We are always looking for volunteers to read on a regular basis or to be a substitute reader in classrooms in Glynn County.

Let’s talk about how you can become a part of Reading Rockets and help a child fall in love with  reading.
