All about Our Journey Sunshine Academy

Our Journey Sunshine Academy (OJ) is a preschool in rural Njoro, Kenya committed to providing quality education to deeply impoverished children.  We not only educate around 100 students, but we feed them twice a day--for many, these are the only meals they will receive each day.
Our Journey Sunshine Junior Academy was first started in 2003 by the Reverends David and Anne Kinyanjui who saw a tremendous need to help street children in their community.  Originally housed in a single room mud-walled  structure, Sunshine Junior Academy (as it was originally named) quickly outgrew its initial space.  In 2007, as fate would have it, Maureen Ahern, founder and Executive Director of Our Journey, Inc. (a 501 (c)3 organization in the United States, was introduced to Pastor David.  In 2015, Sunshine Junior Academy and OJI formally partnered together and began looking for land upon which to move the still growing school.  In 2016 the school would move to what is known as the Old Turkey Farm on the outskirts of Njoro with the expectation that this would ultimately become its permanent residing place.  At the end of 2017, an opportunity to purchase 3 acres of land just outside of Njoro presented itself and the decision was made to move the school once again.  In January 2018 a new 3000 square foot block structure was  begun and by April 1st students and teachers began classes in their new school.  In 2019, a new kitchen was opened and the school was officially dedicated in memory of Mama Maureen's granddaughter Ella Bothwell in June. Many plans are being made for permanent power and a deep water well.  We have come so far, with so much farther to go.
